Lake Shasta Caverns is one of California’s most captivating natural attractions, nestled in the foothills of Mt. Shasta and perched 900 feet above the shimmering waters of Shasta Lake.
Recognized as a National Natural Landmark, this geologic wonder offers a unique blend of adventure, education, and scenic beauty for visitors of all ages.
Since opening in 1964, Lake Shasta Caverns has amazed guests with its stunning underground formations, including cave coral and helicities. The 2025 installation of state-of-the-art LED lights highlights the beauty of the cavern. Passageways do not require crawling or climbing. Conveniently located just off I-5, Lake Shasta Caverns is open daily and one of California’s most unforgettable cave experiences.
Your journey begins with a scenic boat ride across the gorgeous Lake Shasta, followed by a bus ascent to the top of the mountain, where the ancient caves await for your arrival.
Cave Dave will then guide you through the cave system, giving you a brief tour with information and history about the caves. Surrounded by millions of years of geological history, you'll be impressed by Mother Nature as you enter the final room for 45 min sound session.
This deeply restorative 45-minute sound experience is designed to encourage profound relaxation, quiet the mind, and support nervous system regulation. As the final vibrations gently fade, a spectacular laser show synchronized with beautiful orchestral music illuminates the cavern, creating an unforgettable finale.
Whether you're seeking peace, renewal, inspiration, or simply a one-of-a-kind adventure, this is an opportunity to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with yourself in a setting that few people ever have the chance to experience

Sound Healing plus Caves
Sound healing in a cave combines the physics of unique acoustic resonance with natural sensory deprivation to accelerate physical and mental relaxation. When therapeutic instruments like gongs, crystal bowls, and chimes are played underground, the structural environment changes how the human body processes the sound.
The Acoustic Physics of Caves
-
Natural Amplification: Unlike standard rooms with porous drywall that absorbs sound, cave walls are made of dense, curved rock. These hard surfaces bounce audio waves continuously around the chamber, amplifying the volume and sustaining the vibrations without electronic assistance.
-
Omnidirectional Resonance: The random geometry of stalactites, stalagmites, and stone alcoves scatters sound evenly. This eliminates a single "point source," wrapping the listener in a 360-degree, three-dimensional blanket of sound.
-
Longer Decay and Sustain: Instruments played in a cave exhibit an extended reverberation time. This allows the complex overtones and sub-harmonics of gongs and bowls to layer on top of each other, creating a richer, deeper auditory experience than what is possible in an indoor studio.
Biological and Psychological Impacts
-
Brainwave Entrainment: The sustained, rhythmic frequencies produced during a cave sound bath shift brain activity from a waking Beta state to a deeply relaxed Alpha or Theta state. Theta brainwaves are associated with deep meditation, enhanced creativity, and REM-like healing states.
-
Vibrational Cellular Massage: Because the human body is roughly 70% water, sound waves travel through muscle and tissue much faster than through the air. The amplified resonance of a cave directly stimulates tissue and helps regulate muscle tension.
-
Sensory Deprivation: Caves isolate you from external environmental noise, sunlight, and cellular signals. This absence of daily sensory triggers signals the sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight) to shut down, allowing the parasympathetic nervous system (rest-and-digest) to take over quickly.
Historical and Cultural Roots
-
Prehistoric Rituals: Archaeoacoustics researchers have discovered that ancient cave art is often clustered heavily in the specific pockets of caves that hold the highest quality acoustic resonance. Early humans used their voices to gauge the echo of these spaces for navigation and spiritual ceremonies.
-
Ancient Healing Chambers: Archaeological sites, such as the ancient Greek Asclepieion of Epidaurus, show that ancient societies built sleep and recovery rooms specifically to filter patterned music and steady the breathing of patients.

About the Lake Shasta Caverns
Truly Historic California Caverns
Lake Shasta Caverns is one of three known caverns in Shasta County. Our beds originated 250 million years ago when the earth was subjected to the folding of its crust. Ultimately, this created the Klamath Mountains.
Discovering the Lake Shasta Caverns
The caverns were part of life for the Wintu Indians, who lived in the area. In the 1870s, a fish hatchery and small town were built on the McCloud River and the cave was named Baird Cave.
A hatchery employee, J.A. Richardson, officially discovered the caverns in 1878. Since 1964, they have been opened as a natural attraction to the public.
